The Beachy Head Women 2018 examines the hyper-sexualisation of the Black female body, speaking to the precarity of Black life, and specifically Black women’s proximity to death and the vulnerability we experience in our lives.
Beachy Head is a multifaceted location: the highest chalk sea cliff in Britain, a location infamous for its high rates of suicide, and also home to The Beachy Head Lady, a Sub-Saharan African woman who lived on those cliffs between 200-250 AD.
Williams views this evidence as proof that Black women have always existed in the British landscape even though they have been written out of history. Williams is interested in Black relationships to the UK landscape, referencing Ingrid Pollard’s Pastoral Interlude as an influence.
